There was a knocking in the Spirit
As I woke one morning, before my brain had time to kick into reality, before it could think logically, I heard a knocking in the spirit. About 5 to 7 knocks, so clear I could not mistake it was God. My kids were staying at their dad’s, so it was not one of them knocking their usual quick, double knock on my door to see if I was awake. God knocked multiple knocks when I was home alone so that I would not question it was God.
Over the following week and a half, I lost count how many times the following scripture showed up either in my social media feed, in my bible app or shared through a friend.
It was obvious God was knocking, calling out to answer the door of my heart and let Him in. He is calling us to come and seek Him deeply.
“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.”Matthew 7:7-8 NLT
Will you open the door to Jesus?
Are you overwhelmed with life? Busy with everything you need to get done in a day and the distractions that get in the way, and as a result feel distant from God.
God’s wants you to give Him your time and seek His will, so He can open doors of opportunity for you and bless you abundantly.
Let’s be real!
Have real conversations with God, like you are talking to your spouse or your best friend. He wants you to be real and honest with Him. If you are angry, depressed, anxious, fearful, or feel shame or guilt, tell Him. Pour out your heart honestly, even through tears if necessary.
Ask Him why you feel this way and allow Him to minister to your heart. Wait for Him to give you the revelation of why you feel the way you do and open your heart to receive your healing.
A good prayer to pray is “if it is your will, let it be done!” Jesus prayed this prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane.
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”Luke 22:42 NIV
Jesus prayed this prayer to take away His suffering.
God will minister to you through your suffering when you pray like Jesus did.
But what if you are not praying through suffering but praying for a desire you want in your life? What then? Keep reading for more about praying God’s will for desires.
Pray for the desires of your heart.
When praying for our own desires we can include “if it is your will, let it be done” and wait for God to answer the desires we ask for.
There is nothing wrong in praying this prayer. God hears all our prayers. Even the ones we don’t speak out. He hears the desires of our heart and answers our prayers that our heart cries out. Through our private longing in our heart, our thinking and through our tears.
But we can get disappointed when we don’t get what we ask for. This happens when we pray for a desire we want and think is good, but God has something better for us.
When we pray for the things we desire, He will still answer you. It could be a yes, not now, or no I have something better for you. You will still learn God’s will for your life when you pray for your heart’s desire by the way He answers your prayer.
If it is yes, He will speak prophetically to you, and you will be in the will of God. He will also speak a ‘no’ clearly too. If you don’t hear anything you will need to wait on God for the answer. A delay may just mean, not now, so surrender it into His hands to deliver what you have asked for in His timing.
And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.1 John 5:15 NLT
If you don’t know how to hear from God, ask Him to give you ears to hear and eyes to see in the spirit. He will delight in giving you this gift.
Is it good for us?
How do we know if what we are asking for is good for us? God is a good father, and He gives us what we ask for, but he also withholds the things that are not good for us, even though they look good to us, and we desire them.
“You fathers—if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead? Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not! So, if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”Luke 11:11-13 NLT
Everything that comes from God is good and if He is delaying answer to your prayer, He may be preparing you for the answer, or He has something better for you.
Be patient and wait on the Lord. Sit with Him in worship and give Him your heart while you wait.
Surrender your personal desires.
Surrender your own personal desires and seek God’s will. Have an open heart to lay down your own desires at the alter and pick up His will for your life.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
Seek Gods will for your life.
What if we were to go to prayer asking for God’s will instead of our will?
I can do nothing on my own. I judge as God tells me. Therefore, my judgment is just, because I carry out the will of the one who sent me, not my own will.John 5:30 NLT
Jesus never did anything of His own will. He took time out to be alone with God. He removed Himself from His works to seek God’s will and only carried out God’s will. We need to follow Jesus’ example and do what Jesus does.
Have you been doing things your own way and hoping God will bless it? Perhaps God is knocking on the door of your heart to come and learn His will for your life instead.
We can pray directly into God’s will and know we are praying into what is best for us when we ask, seek, and knock for God’s will. He will answer, you will find, and the door will be opened.
Surrender to His will and thank Him for what He is about to do, then you will see the breakthrough. Thank Him for the breakthrough you are about to receive.
Praying into God’s will, His word and giving thanks is powerful and effective prayer.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:6-7 NIV
When you hear God’s will, you will be able to have the peace of God that will guard your heart. You will not waiver from believing what He has said to you when the storms of life come up against you.
God gives us the desires of our heart.
When we delight ourselves in the Lord, He puts the desires on our heart. This happens when we seek His will for our lives by spending time with Him.
Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.Psalm 37:4 ESV
You have relationship with your spouse, children, and friends. If you want those relationships to flourish, you give them quality time. If you say you love someone, you show it. You don’t say I love my wife or my husband and then ignore them, going about your life as if they are not even there. Your relationship won’t last very long if you don’t put any effort into spending time with the ones you love.
Your relationship with God works in the same way. He desires you to spend quality time with Him. This is how your relationship with God will grow deeper.
Do you say you love God?
Do you spend the time with Him to show Him you love Him and build on the relationship?
Delight yourself in the Lord by giving him your time, deepening your love. Then you will hear His Will, His desire for you and these things will be the desires of your heart. You will then be praying into His will for your life. Praying for the desires He has put in your heart.
When you spend time with God to learn His will, you won’t be striving and wasting time in your own strength trying to push through barriers, pain, and struggle in the things that are not from God. This can cause you to burn out. Instead, you will know what He wants you to do, and you will step out in the things He has put in your heart.
How do we know if we are praying God’s will?
How do we pray prayers that are in line with God’s will for your life so you can receive the favour and blessings God has for you?
Ask Him to show you what His will is and then pray into that.
Find a quiet space where you can tune into God with no distractions. Go into your room and close your door. Put on worship music and focus on Jesus. He is our high priest and intercedes on our behalf to the Father.
Simply ask “Father, what is your will for me?’
That’s it! That’s all you need to pray. It’s as simple as that.
Then sit quietly and wait for him to talk to you. Don’t come to Him with your own agenda, lay it all down at the foot of the cross and sit and wait for Him to speak while your worship.
If you can pray in your heavenly language, pray in the spirit. When you allow your spirit to talk to God’s spirit, you are surrendering your will and your spirit is praying God’s will. God may download to you while you are speaking in the spirit.
Take the time to listen. Invite Holy Spirit to fill you and rest in God’s peace as you worship and sit with Him.
He may lead you to scripture, show you a vision, give you a word or speak to you in the way He knows you will understand.
What if He doesn’t say anything?
He may not answer you immediately in the moment of prayer. He may answer you later as you go about your day. He may drop a word into your mind while you are cooking dinner or making the bed, for example. You will know that word has not come from your own thinking. It will be something out of left field and it will hit your heart.
You may also hear it in a sermon from the Pastor. A now word. A rhema word of God for your situation.
You may see signs in the world around you. You will suddenly get an ‘aha’ moment from something you see or do.
Sometimes God speaks just before you go off to sleep or wake in the morning. He will speak to you when your mind has not yet woken up, or you are in the semi conscious state before sleep and cannot analyse what has been said. Just like God did for me when I heard the knocking in the spirit.
Keep a note pad and pen next to your bed ready for when this happens, or you will forget what was said. You will want to meditate on it or research it when you are conscious.
I remember a time as I was just waking up God spoke a word to me that I had never heard before. I didn’t even know it was a word until I googled it and found it was in the dictionary and it’s meaning had something to do with what God was about to do in my life.
Dreams and Visions
He may give you a dream once you go to sleep at night, or a vision as you go about your day. This will require you to press into God even more to interpret the dream or vision with Holy Spirit.
Visions are more clear and easier to interpret than a dream. You will need to rely on Holy Spirit to give you the meaning. This will require you to go deeper with God. You may need to seek out someone who is gifted in interpreting dreams. Someone who can interpret dreams can give you the meaning of the symbols. Once you know the meaning of the symbols you can put it into context of what you are praying for, or the circumstances in your life.
Meditate on God’s word.
God may give you a scripture to stand on. Use this scripture in every moment you can throughout your day. Use it especially when the enemy comes at you to attack the desire God has put in your heart. The enemy will lie to you, making you doubt what God said. When you meditate on the word God has placed on your heart, the enemy will not be able to sway you.
You may need to look up all the scriptures that are relevant to what you are believing for and think on those scriptures. Repeat them throughout your day. Say them out loud so your mind hears them, and they drop into your heart. This is what will guard your heart with the peace that surpasses all understanding. This is how you defeat the enemy.
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.James 4:7 NIV
Spend focused time in prayer.
Go into your private space, close the door, put on worship music, and pray into what God has given you. If it is a dream or a vision, a word, or a scripture, use that to pray into.
Thank God for what He has promised you. Give Him praise as if you have already received what you are believing for.
Praise and thankfulness are the keys to your breakthrough.
If you pray this way, you are no longer praying “if it is your will, then let it be done.” Now you know it is God’s will for you and he will give you what you ask for. God’s word never returns void.
So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.Isaiah 55:11 NKJV
Seek other people’s agreement.
Get confirmation. Ask trusted leaders in your church to partner with you in prayer. There is power in agreement.
“I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you.Matthew 18:19 NLT
Do seek out trusted leaders who will hear in the spirit for you to be sure you are hearing from God correctly. It is good to bring significant things you are praying for in your life under the covering of your church leaders.
You don’t want someone who will just agree with you if they are not spirit led. I refer to what I said earlier about praying for things that seem good but is not God’s will. Someone who is not spirit led will agree in prayer because it sounds good but not know it is God. They love you and want to please you by agreeing with you regardless.
You can pray good prayers, but wouldn’t it be better to pray God prayers? Prayers that are spirit led.
your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Matthew 6:10 NIV
You want to be calling the things God has for you down from heaven. Gods will for you is in heaven and you need to seek them and call them down in prayer. Decree them from the throne room and declare them over your life.
When you bring your prayers under covering and have others join with you, they will share in your testimony and celebrate with praise with you, when God moves in your life. This will lift up and encourage others and increase not just your faith, but those who share in it with you.

I invite you to leave a comment or send me an email to let me know how this speaks to you. You can ask for prayer to help you if you are struggling to feel God in your life, or if you would like me to partner with you in prayer for what you are believing for.
